This project involved the transformation of a traditional family home through a well-considered loft conversion, delivering much-needed additional space while preserving the character and proportions of the original property. With the existing loft space lacking sufficient headroom, we gained planning permission to raise the eaves and increase the roof pitch—creating the height required for a functional and comfortable new floor.
The conversion includes two new bedrooms and a family bathroom, adding valuable living space without altering the ground floor layout or extending the building footprint.
A Natural Continuation of the Original House
Thoughtful Roof Design:
The new roof structure was carefully designed to follow the lines and proportions of the existing house. By lifting the eaves and adjusting the roof pitch, we were able to introduce usable height discreetly, ensuring the extended roofline felt like a natural part of the original form—not an obvious alteration.
In-Keeping Materials and Detailing:
The full-width rear dormer has been finished in materials that complement the existing exterior, maintaining visual consistency from every angle. Window styles and roof finishes were matched or sensitively updated to ensure a cohesive appearance. The result is an addition that blends seamlessly with the property, rather than standing apart from it.
Respecting Scale and Symmetry:
Particular attention was paid to the rhythm and symmetry of the home’s existing elevations. The dormer sits comfortably within the rear roof slope, and proportions were balanced to avoid overwhelming the rear façade. This ensured the design enhances rather than detracts from the home’s character.
Smart, Space-Efficient Layout
No Loss of Existing Space:
The new staircase rises from the existing landing, with only a minor reconfiguration to the first-floor bathroom. This retained all original bedrooms and allowed the new floor to integrate effortlessly with the rest of the home.
Bright, Comfortable Rooms:
The two new bedrooms and bathroom benefit from generous ceiling heights and well-positioned windows that maximise natural light. The layout has been planned for practicality and privacy, creating comfortable spaces suitable for growing children or visiting guests.
More Space Without Moving
This project provided the space the family needed without the disruption and expense of moving house. Staying in the neighbourhood they enjoy, near schools and familiar routines, meant they could adapt their home to meet changing needs while retaining the location that works for them.
The conversion has added real value to the property—both financially and functionally. It’s a future-proof investment that delivers new living space, flexibility and comfort, all while staying true to the character of the original home.
