This project involved the transformation of a traditional semi-detached brick home through a single storey rear extension. The goal was to create a bright, open-plan kitchen, dining, and living space with improved flow and a stronger connection to the garden—bringing modern functionality and flexibility to a much-loved family home.
Our design focused on opening up the rear of the property to enhance natural light, increase usable space, and support a more sociable way of living. The result is a thoughtfully considered extension with a pitched tiled roof, skylights, and full-width aluminium bi-fold doors that invite the outdoors in and allow the space to adapt to the evolving needs of its occupants.
Improving Flow, Light and Daily Living
Open-Plan Living for Connection and Comfort:
The open-plan layout supports more connected family life, allowing household members to cook, relax, work, and play within one shared space. It promotes interaction throughout the day—whether preparing meals, helping with homework, or spending time together during evenings and weekends—without feeling confined or disconnected.
Maximised Natural Light:
Large glazed doors and rooflights flood the interior with daylight from multiple angles, transforming the once-enclosed rear of the home into a bright, welcoming space. This increase in natural light enhances wellbeing, reduces reliance on artificial lighting, and makes the space feel more expansive and uplifting.
Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Transition:
Full-width bi-fold doors open directly onto the garden, creating a smooth and accessible link between inside and out. This connection makes it easy to step outdoors for meals, play, or relaxation, and helps the garden feel like a natural extension of the living space—especially during warmer months.
